Real-world experience
You can test a career idea before choosing a program. Small conversations and experiences count—and can change what you want to explore next.
STEP 01
Ask for a conversation
Reach out to someone doing work you are curious about. Ask what a normal day is like, what surprised them, and how they got started.
STEP 02
Observe the work
Ask whether a job shadow, workplace tour, open house, or community event is possible. Follow age, safety, and site rules.
STEP 03
Try a small project
Build something, help with a community activity, or take on a short project that uses a skill you want to test.
STEP 04
Volunteer or work
A part-time job or volunteer role can reveal what you enjoy about a setting and what you would rather avoid.
Keep it safe and manageable
- Ask a trusted adult to help with introductions and logistics.
- Follow workplace safety rules and age-related requirements.
- Do not share sensitive personal information with unfamiliar contacts.
- Write down what you learned while it is fresh.
